Our Story

The name is derived from the wild carrots growing alongside the river which the first homesteaders crossed in 1911 to inhabit near its north bank. Settlement was slow until the Canadian National Railroad reached the Carrot River site in 1931 bringing southern farmers seeking new locations away from the great drought on the prairies. Carrot River became a Village in 1941 and incorporated as a Town on April 01, 1948. Currently we maintain an approximate town and rural population of 2000+.

Carrot River has been described by non-community individuals as stubborn and ambitious .. stubborn as in resilient and ambitious as in visionary. With communities of any size there are challenges in business retention and expansion. However, with our proximity to field forest and water, local economic strengths lie in agriculture industrial tourism and service-related business. These assets are a good foundation for development and investment growth, and we welcome it.
