Upper Miramichi

Our Story

It all starts here! Traveling north on Route 8 towards the magical Miramichi River, your 1st stop is the Rural Community of Upper Miramichi. This community has it all – history, nature, culture, and adventure. It’s a vibrant and diverse destination that will surprise and delight you with its hidden gems and friendly locals.

Upper Miramichi is composed of 16 neighboring communities that span across two counties: Northumberland and York and covers 1833 sq km or 708 sq miles approximately. The area is known for its majestic forests, rolling hills, sparkling lakes, and pristine rivers. The Southwest Miramichi River is especially famous for its salmon fishing and canoeing.

Upper Miramichi has a vibrant and welcoming nature- from long ago when Mi’kmaw peoples welcomed European settlers (mostly Irish), helping them establish a life based on living off the land, with a daily rhythm flowing with the river tides. Local industry is predominately forestry-based, but increasingly more people are choosing Upper Miramichi’s friendly nature and quality of life over the hustle and bustle offered by neighbouring city Fredericton.

You’ll have the chance to experience the local culture through music, art, food, and festivals. People are proud of their heritage and traditions, but also open to new ideas and experiences. Upper Miramichi is a place where you can discover new things, have fun adventures, and make lasting memories. So, what are you waiting for? Plan your trip to Upper Miramichi today and see for yourself!
