Our Story
Miramichi River Valley is a community formed of several small towns and villages that stretch across the Southwest and Northwest branches. Also inside the boundaries are many tributaries that feed into the mighty Miramichi, including the Sevogle, Cains, Renous, and Bartholomew rivers. If you want a river lifestyle, there is certainly a place for you here. With several village hubs, each with a different “personality”, you can pick your match. Many hubs have a school at the center and restaurants, cafes, businesses and services are all here. Recreation and leisure activities abound, including public parks with night markets, two skating rinks, multiple baseball fields and grassy turfs, zipline, canoeing, tubing, ATVing, drag racing, and fishing.
Tens of thousands of Atlantic salmon make their way up the river annually, making the area a fisherman’s paradise. Each year, nearly 50% of all Atlantic salmon caught in North America (by rod), are caught right here.
Experience other wonderful spectacles of nature like the annual spawning of the striped mouth bass, making the river surface appear to be boiling or stargazing under the unspoiled night sky.
Immerse yourself in Indigenous culture in neighbouring Metepenagiag First Nation. Metepenagiag boasts a vibrant array of activities and experiences from annual pow wow, washer toss tournament, trout derby and the Metepenagiag Heritage Park. The park preserves protects and presents the rich Mi’kmaq culture with exhibits that tells the story of the Augustine Mound - a cemetery dating back to over 600 BC and the Oxbow, a deeply stratified village site called Metepenagiag. Situated at the head tide, Metepenagiag has had over 3,000 years of continuous settlements right to the present day.
