Our Story

The Economic Development Branch, was created in 2007 to facilitate the development, implementation and monitoring of regional economic development strategies and initiatives that will promote and encourage business development, economic sustainability, and investment while strengthening partnerships between industries, private sector, communities and government. In addition, the Branch continually supports our local businesses through the implementation of the Wood Buffalo Regional Economic Development Strategy (WBREDS) and specific projects undertaken within the following main areas of focus: business retention and expansion, rural economic development, labour force development and investment facilitation.

In addition, our Branch provides essential support and assistance to our local and prospective businesses including business and economic information/navigation services. These areas of focus are designed to facilitate and implement specific strategies and recommendations outlined within our Municipal Development Plan (MDP), WBREDS, and Commercial and Industrial Land Use Study (CILUS).
