The Smoky River Region is a vibrant and productive area of nearly 1,000,000 acres located in the Peace Country in northwestern Alberta. The communities of Falher, McLennan, Girouxville, and Donnelly are within the M.D. boundaries. In total, approximately 5,000 people live in the Smoky River Region. Strong agricultural roots rich in Francophone culture characterize the area. Pioneering French settlers opened up the land in the early 1900’s. As one of the most productive regions of high quality agriculture in the province, the Smoky River Region is a warm and welcoming place in which to live, work and invest. Agriculture is a major industry in the Smoky River Region. Highly regarded as one of the most fertile areas of the province, farmers produce a variety of crops including canola, wheat, oats, barley and pulse. According to the 2016, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development Statistics Canada Data, the Smoky River Region has a total of 289 farm families who farm a total of 545,973 acres (Note: this also accounts for the third largest pool of cultivated acres in the province). With so few families farming so many acres of land, the demand for new technology is at its peak. Many farm related businesses are taking up shop in the region.
